Review: The Yocan Magneto

Yocan Magneto Magnetic Connection

The Yocan Magneto is an all-in-one wax vaporizer that utilizes revolutionary magnetic threading.

Introduction

Vaporizer enthusiasts everywhere have been looking for something different. It seems that the more popular the industry becomes, the less originality is found and innovation stagnates. Not so with the Yocan Magneto. The newest device to come from Yocan, the Magneto comes with some really interesting features that have the potential to change the way you think about your vaporizer.

This is a wax pen, but it is so much more than that. The Magneto represents a changing of the guard when it comes to portable wax vaporization. Yocan is not content to release the same products year after year. Though it may still be evolving (and rapidly developing a user base), the current iteration of the Magneto is a complete unit that will keep your hand clean and your spirits lifted. There’s a lot to like about the Magneto, especially after your get your hands on one.

Magnetic Threading

Let’s get the elephant out of the room, this device uses magnetic threading in ways that drastically improve your ability to vaporize at will, practically anywhere. Perfect for concerts and road trips, these magnetic connections may seem like a small adjustment, but they can halve the time it takes to get to where you want to.  You can liken it to when Apple switched over to magnetic connectors on their power cords. No longer would you trip over your $1500 laptop and send it crashing to the floor because you lost your focus for a moment.

In the same vein, the Magneto takes all of the guesswork out of loading and unloading your wax device–and let’s be honest–that’s easily the hardest part about using wax. There is a magnetic connection between the base of this device and attached atomizer. It doesn’t pop off too easily and slides directly back to its original spot with little effort. And, although it may seem like a small feature, this means you can take your device apart for loading with basically just one hand. That doesn’t mean you should start dabbing and driving, but it does mean that you will likely keep a lot more wax in the silicone case and not on your fingers.

Game Changer

Yocan claims that this device is a game changer and I am inclined to believe them. They released the Magneto in Spring of 2017 to go along with their brand new e-cig, the Hive. However, the Magneto is likely designed as more of an update to the popular Yocan Evolve. The Evolve is a great device, as are most of the devices in the solid Yocan lineup. But there are definitely some areas that the Magneto can improve upon compared to the Evolve. That is not to say that the Evolve is a flawed device, on the contrary, the Magneto will have a hard time taking a bit out of the large number of users that utilize the Evolve as a daily unit.

However, it may just be a matter of time until the Magneto overtakes it–especially in terms of quality. One of the main gripes about the Evolve is that it can become hot during extended sessions when compared to similar vaporizers. With the Magneto, Yocan has flipped the script. This device rarely ever gets even slightly uncomfortable in your hands. When you consider that the user has complete control over the temperature, like most wax pens, this is a welcome change in a device that is continually becoming easier to use from novices up to experts.

The Magneto does more than just outshine its predecessors. It stands apart from the entire market, which has become more concerned with appearances and social standing in recent times. The Magneto, on the other hand, offers an inexpensive, practical device that is destined to save you money with its efficiency.

Built Like a Yocan

There’s nothing quite like a Yocan device. There is typically an incredible amount of variation when it comes to the build quality for vaporizers and wax pens.  Nowadays, there are so many choices that it is hard to tell what is a legitimate product and what is a cheap knock-off. You don’t have to worry about that with the Yocan, they pack their devices with features and have a long, steady track record to draw from. It may be tempting to try a cheaper device, but considering how inexpensive and reliable their lineup is, why would you?

It all starts with the coil, as you might expect. The Magneto dumped the trend of using underwhelming nichrome coils to heat its chamber. Instead, they went for quality and included an efficient and flavorful ceramic coil. It takes a couple more seconds to heat up, but the flavor and efficiency that it provides compared to nichrome makes this a non-issue. The ceramic coil also tends to last quite a bit longer than the nichrome.

Once they’ve nailed the coil, engineers really just have to package it in an attractive casing and call it a day. That was too easy for Yocan, who took this opportunity to add quality and features not typically found in Magneto’s price range. The magnetic contacts are all maintained with high quality magnets that have a strong attraction and will likely outlast your device by thousands of years.

A review would be remiss for forgetting about the unique way that the Magneto charges. Instead of requiring a complicated mechanism that requires you to learn the ins-and-outs of threading (no thanks), their battery has an actual USB port built in to it. Not to mention, the battery is a 1100 mAh unit that nearly doubles the average battery capacity for wax vaporizers. Yocan once again nails down an aspect of vape pens that is frustrating and improves upon it.

Speed-loading and Ease-of-Use

With any great device, it’s complete set of features add up to more than the sum of its parts. What you get with the revolutionary magnetic threading is not a “cool” device that you can show off. You get a complete 360° change in your approach to vape pens. Now, devices like this are easy enough to use that novice users with no wax experience can come right in and use it to it’s full powers. Consider the built-in silicone holding chamber. It’s a great feature that makes this device truly portable by adding storage to the casing, itself. However, they avoided a big mistake (and many, many spills) and connected this part using traditional threading. That’s engineering designed to work for you.

This concept is also represented by the functional  oil cap. This magnetic cap is well-engineered and frustration-free. However, it also features a built-in dab tool that users can dip into their wax/concentrates and pull out full of wax. As long as you don’t drop it into the material, you can avoid touching any of that viscous wax and keep the towels in your house nice and white.

How to Use:

  1. Remove the magnetic mouthpiece/functional cap and the atomizer cap/dab tool
  2. Dip the dab tool into your material and place it back on the atomizer as a cap
  3. Place mouthpiece/functional cap back onto the device
  4. Press the power button 5 times to activate the device
  5. When ready to inhale, press the button and draw slowly from the mouthpiece

Conclusion

The Yocan Magneto is a game changer. That much can be said, but it’s also a reliable device that can be used daily with ease. That’s about as much praise as can be expected from a vaporizer pen under $100 (and sometimes under $50) and still I am impressed by the strides that have been made with this iteration in the Yocan lineup. I am a big fan of the magnetic threading and I fully expect this to be an industry-standard feature in the coming years. There’s nothing quite like the frustration of a bad threading when it comes to an expensive device and the Magneto avoids that situation altogether by making a simple improvement. This should be a wake-up call to all the vape pen designers out there who think users want to pay extra for a design that does nothing to improve the user experience.

And that’s just it, there’s not much more to the Magneto than a fantastic user experience. It’s attractive, to be fair, coming in silver, black, red, blue, and orange. But nothing comes before you, the user. This is definitely a device I would be comfortable taking on a months-long adventure with no opportunity for replacement. The Magneto is made strong and it performs stronger.
